eLearning
tools.
There
are currently two open source
tools
installed on a test server that seem to be the most used and complete
ones:
dokeos and moodle; however there are a lot of other eLearning tools
that could
be analyzed and tested if someone suggests them.
Both
tools provide agenda, forum, chat,
conferences, mail and content management tools (e.g. to create tests or
quizzes) for every course. They also use the same technology (PhP +
MySQL) and manage
many languages, including French, English, Spanish, Italian and German.
The only differences detected so far, is
that moodle allows passwords for files and management of the themes for
the interface (new themes creation or use of the themes included in the
distribution). There is no mail server configued yet, therefore some of
the features mentioned above may not be available.
- Dokeos
By
registering at the dokeos
test site of the unige, a
teacher will be allowed to create his own courses
but he’ll only have access to his self-created
courses.

- Moodle
The "connection"
link at the bottom of the test
site's homepage allows users to
create a new account, to login as
guest or to login with an existing user account. The authentication
procedure for new users is by default via e-mail, but as the mail
server is not configured yet, the new users should create the
account and it'll be manually activated.
