Working Efficiently

An important skill to master when working with a computer is how to work efficiently. There are 3 general ways to improve your skills so that you can save time as your are working.

The first is knowing how to access certain functionalities in a variety of ways. For example, when you are working for hours at a time on a word processing task, you can save a lot of time by using the keyboard to access functionalities that are normally accessed using a mouse, such as menus and items in menus. The time is saved because you don't have to move your hand from the keyboard to the mouse, do the moving and clicking with the mouse, and then move your hand back to the keyboard. This might not seem like it would take a long time, and when done only once or twice it doesn't, but over long periods of time, it can add up to quite a lot.

The second skill is knowing how to effectively organize and find files in your computer. This topic is quite large in and of itself, so we will discuss it on its own in Managing your files and folders.

The third skill is knowing how to quickly solve technical problems when you run into them, or finding out how to do something using a particular application. You can save yourself a lot of time and frustration if you know how and where to find information most effectively.
