I am a computational linguist. I read Greats (Greek, Latin, Ancient History and Philosphy) at the University of Oxford, and moved into computing through a job as systems' programmer with ICI Ltd. I was a Lecturer in Computation at UMIST, and then came to ISSCO in 1974 for one year - and stayed for 33. I was the Director from 1978 until my retirement in 2007.

My research interests are in machine translation, semantics of natural languages and evaluation of language engineering products and systems. I have been a consultant to IBM Ltd., to the French CNRS and to the European Commission. I have been involved in a number of European projects, including Eurotra, and more recently TEMAA. I am chairman of the EAGLES Working Group on Evaluation.

I taught at the Translation and Interpretation School (ETI) of the University of Geneva, where I was responsible for a Certificate of Specialisation in Machine Assisted Translation.

I have been active in a number of professional associations, and have held offices in ECCAI, EACL, EAMT and IAMT. Through ISSCO's work in the Swiss Language Industry Observatory (OSIL) I was active in the Network of French speaking Language Observatories. (RIOFIL).

King is my professional name: in private life I am also known under the name of Daniel.
